No Eido: Permaculture project for the creation of an edible forest

Description

The project consists of revitalizing agricultural land through the creation of an edible forest with the participation of citizens, to encourage a sustainable management of the forest, and an effective and environmentally friendly food production. We seek to turn the forest into a place for citizens to spend their leisure time with environmental and educational activities.

Edible Forest

The project aims, to provide the community with an edible forest promoting local and ecological production, as well as to empower citizens in self-cultivation and responsible consumption; as well as promoting the consumption of harvest products for personal consumption, improving their eating habits.

Activities

Our first volunteers

Volunteering for SomosTerra to build the edible forest was one of the best decisions of my life. If you come to volunteer here, you are guaranteed to work with amazing and warmhearted people who care not only for the environment but also for the local community and personal relationships. The area of Nigrán is beautiful all year long but be prepared to bring along your raincoat and wellingtons because the weather is rather similar to England than to the rest of Spain.

You’ll learn about biodiversity and fight the monstrous eucalyptus, plant flowers and vegetables and maybe sometimes ferment some cow poo but always in the best company. Be prepared to do actual physical work but with the safety of knowing that your coordinator will listen to your needs and preferences and make sure that your wellbeing is in the first place.

Alessandro, volunteer between October 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025

The project was amazing, from the very beginning, Raquel and Diana did everything they could to help us and make us feel comfortable during the move. The work was very dynamic; the field is quite large, allowing different types of activities to do and plants to grow, so be prepared to be in touch with soil. You’ll learn the principles of permaculture, getting to know plants and animals living there and their role in the ecosystem, the field is also full of surprises, without saying else.

Galicia’s climate is predominantly rainy, so waterproof clothing is obviously required, although on sunny days, you can truly admire the place’s beauties that switch between forests and ocean. Definitely a worthy experience to take!
